The New Rules of Fitness (Part 2)

New Rule: All Stretching Is Not Equal
As the old saying goes, "there is a time and place for everything" shenanigans optional here.
Before your workout it is generally accepted as the best time to add in some dynamic type of stretches as opposed to static stretching. Dynamic stretch examples are a lunge with a hip raise, or basically getting your body to move a specific joint through a fluid range of motion. The beauty in this dynamic stretching component is that its main purpose is to prep your body in many ways to perform and feel its best during the workout.
If you insist on static stretching before your workout just be sure to include some dynamic stretching after to offset some of the performance disadvantages that pre workout static stretching brings to the table.
New Rule: Implement Several Different Training Styles-
When I say training styles I am looking at the options we have available to us and the breakdown of the systems of the body. We have muscle that responds to hypertrophy work (muscle gain), power work (how quickly we can move ourselves or an object); an example of power work could be med ball slams, kettle-bell swings or power cleans, next is strength work, actually getting stronger and adding lean muscle mass to increase our bodies fat burning ability and helps us move better on a daily basis, cardio work from low intensity all the way to high intensity, they all have there own time and place in addition to particular unique benefits that cant be dismissed.
New Rule: Utilizing Training Blocks-
This one is fun and sounds like something out of a kids game with legos or something like that. We all must play with training blocks hahahaha (in weird old man Russian voice there).
Okay, all kidding aside. This can be broken down and is often times overcomplicated and maybe rightfully so when we are dealing with million dollar athletes, Olympians and those at the peak of there sport. But, when it comes to us regular Joe's and Jane's we just should keep in mind that a training program should have a particular goal in mind, i.e. fat loss, muscle gain, strength gain, performance enhancement, feel better etc.
You can emphasize one of those or even create a hierarchy of priorities for your fitness program and should stick to that main goal for at least 12 weeks and really 16 weeks is best. During those 16 weeks those training blocks should come in and have a slightly different workout, emphasis, sub-goal and more that rotates every 4-6 weeks. Doing this will keep the body, mind and soul for that matter refreshed and ready to tackle the next challenge!
New Rule: Recovery Is A Priority-
This is not a one size fits all approach either. It just takes a little tinkering and finding out a little more about how your body responds to a particular fitness program.
When you look at recovery consider a few things.
First, how well are you sleeping?
Second, how is your diet looking?
Third, how are you doing on vitamin D? (sunlight is so important)
Fourth, how stressful is your job and family life?
Fifth, How many days a week would you like to train?
These are all questions that must be asked and really try to aim and prioritize sleep, diet and vitamin d above all else to keep your body functioning at its best before you start trying to get all fancy with it.
New Rule: Hire A Professional If Necessary-
Of course I may be a little biased on this one but hey who isn't biased about anything nowadays, right?
If you were going to get your taxes done you would probably hire an accountant, if you were going through legal troubles you would probably hire a lawyer, if you wanted to start your retirement plan you would probably hire a financial advisor, so when it comes to maximizing health, fitness and performance wouldn't you want to hire a professional to get you on the right track?
The choice on that is always ultimately yours but that above logic is why I am working with a group of fellow fitness professionals, (many of whom are where i want to eventually be ) and fitness business mentors/coaches to help me succeed on both the training side of things and the business side of things. All this is so that I may accelerate my business to where i want it to be and in the process change more and more lives.
I am curious as to what are some of the things you agree or disagree with in this article, so please leave me a comment and let me know what you think. Also, if you think I missed a few or have a few of your own rules of fitness then share those with everybody here please!
